STEERING HEAD/FORK STEM AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY 3.23
PREPARE 2. NOTE
Removing bearings destroys them. Always install new

Upper Fork Bracket FASTENER TORQUE VALUE
1. See Figure 3-78. Remove upper fork bracket assembly. Fork stem pinch screw 15-18 ft-lbs 20-24 N·m
Fork stem screw, 1st torque 14-15 ft-lbs 19-20 N·m
a. Remove fork stem screw (1). Fork stem screw, final torque 119--128 in-lbs 13.5-14.5 N·m
b. Remove washer (2). CONSUMABLE PART NUMBER

c. Loosen fork stem pinch screw (5).
PURPOSE

d. Remove upper fork bracket (3).

2. Inspect fork stem and lower fork bracket assembly (10).
Replace as necessary. Properly seat bearing cups in steering head bore. Improper
seating can loosen fork stem bearings adversely affecting

Lower Fork Bracket
Steering Head Bearings
1. Remove upper fork bracket assembly.
NOTICE
2. Remove fork stem and lower fork bracket assembly (10)
Replace both bearing assemblies even if one assembly
from steering head (9).

Steering Head Bearings
1. Inspect steering head bearings (7) and bearing cups (8) 1. See Figure 3-78.lf removed: Install new bearing cups (10)
for: using bearing installer.
Special Tool: STEERING HEAD BEARING RACE
a. Pitting INSTALLER (HD-39302)
b. Wear 2. Grease steering head bearings (9).
Consumable: SPECIAL PURPOSE GREASE (99857-97A)
C. Scoring
3. If removed: Install new dust shield (8) and new steering
head bearing (9) on fork stem and lower fork bracket
assembly (12).
Lower Fork Bracket
1. Install front fork stem and lower fork bracket assembly.
a. Install fork stem through steering head (11).
b. Install new upper steering head bearing (9) and new
dust seal (8).
2. Install upper fork bracket (5).
Upper Fork Bracket
1. If replacing upper fork bracket:
a. Install fork lock. See FORK LOCK (Page 3-73).
