INSPECT RADIATOR AND COOLANT 2.13
GENERAL
General
NOTICE
Use only Genuine Harley-Davidson Extended Life
Antifreeze and Coolant. Use of other coolants/mixtures
may lead to motorcycle damage. (00179c)
GENUINE HARLEY-DAVIDSON EXTENDED LIFE
ANTIFREEZE AND COOLANT is pre-diluted and ready to use
full strength. It provides temperature protection to -34.0 °F
(-36.7 °C). DO NOT add water.
NOTICE Figure 2-21. Coolant Filler Cap/Dipstick
De-ionized water must be used with the antifreeze in the
cooling system. Hard water can cause scale accumulation
in water passages which reduces cooling system
efficiency, leading to overheating and motorcycle damage.
(00195b)
A WARNING
Do not loosen or remove pressure cap when cooling
system is hot. The cooling system is under pressure and
hot coolant and steam can escape from pressure cap,
which could cause severe burns. Allow motorcycle to cool
before servicing the cooling system. (00091c)
1. Minimum fill level
If GENUINE HARLEY-DAVIDSON EXTENDED LIFE 2. Maximum fill level
ANTIFREEZE AND COOLANT is unavailable, a mixture of Figure 2-22. Coolant Filler Cap/Dipstick
de-ionized water and ethylene glycol-based antifreeze may be CLEAN RADIATOR
used. At the first opportunity, change back to GENUINE
HARLEY-DAVIDSON EXTENDED LIFE ANTIFREEZE AND
COOLANT. A CAUTION
At operating temperature, radiators and oil coolers contain
Checking Coolant Level hot fluids. Contact with a radiator or oil cooler can result
1. Position vehicle on level ground resting on the jiffy stand. in minor or moderate burns. (00141 b)
2. Allow motorcycle to cool. NOTICE
3. Remove coolant plug/dipstick. See Figure 2-21. Using a pressure washer to clean radiators or oil coolers
4. See Figure 2-22. Check that coolant level is at the "MAX" can damage cooling fins and reduce airflow. Reduced
line (2). airflow can lead to overheating, resulting in motorcycle
damage. (00056c)
NOTE
If the coolant reservoir is low when the motorcycle is cold, NOTICE
inspect the system for leaks. Repair as needed. Fifi system
with coolant and purge any trapped air. See COOLANT Clean the inlet surface of the radiator regularly. Leaves
(Page 7-8). and other debris can collect on the radiator surface and
degrade radiator performance which could lead to
5. If level is below "MIN" line (1), add GENUINE overheating and motorcycle damage. (00197d}
HARLEY-DAVIDSON EXTENDED LIFE ANTIFREEZE
AND COOLANT until fluid level reaches the "MAX" line 1. Clean debris from radiator fins.
(2).
6. Install coolant reservoir plug/dipstick. See Figure 2-21.
